"Truly astonishing prose, Sinuca embaixo d'água is built with delightful colloquialism and imagination in the images."

Joca Reiners Terron, Folha de S. Paulo

"In a prose that succeeds in endowing each character with a subtle and fully recognizable voice, even without resorting to language experimentations, Carol Bensimon leads the plot with confidence, keeping the story’s topic agenda in synch: the grief, the absence, a certain lack of sense of existence only noticeable in its abrupt ending, and an irrevocable and melancholic feeling of the end of a cycle that runs throughout the whole novel".

Carlos André Moreira, Zero Hora

"Carol Bensimon delivers with Sinuca embaixo d’agua an exemplary novel, spinning a plot of affections that lose ground after a common loss; the overcoming of grief and attempt to recreate their daily lives are treated with tenderness and dissonance, in a thrilling narrative".

"A brief essay on pain and grief - built with intelligence, rock’n’roll and, as paradoxical as it may seem, vitality".

Leandro Sarmatz, Vida Simples

UNDERWATER

SNOOKER

Underwater Pool is a story built around an absence. Seven characters narrate a moment of grief, after Antonia, a girl in her twenties, is killed in an automobile accident. Most of the episodes take place at Polaco’s bar. At the banks of a river, the back of the bar hosts a pool lounge.

The place is frequented by Camilo, Antonia’s rebellious brother, who had a special relationship with his sister: something in between worshiping and protective instinct. His main pastime is dismantling antique cars and then putting them back together.

The shy and sweet Bernardo was one of Antonia’s college friends, with whom she kept a platonic romance. He is the one who’s going to outline an investigation about the accident: was she drunk, disturbed by a heated argument, running away, being followed?

Bernardo and Camilo are not the only ones minding this absence. Polaco, the journalist Helena, the adman Gustavo, the neighbor Lucas and the outsider Santiago are all linked, amongst themselves and to Antônia, thanks to this tragic event, that establishes another concept of  time, made up of memory, difficulty of expression and need for a new learning.
