Eu gosto de listas, e gosto de promoções, portanto, quando fui ao Rio, comprei um belo capa dura papel couché chamado 501 must-read books, por $39. Surpreendeu-me, positivamente, o fato de que nunca ouvi falar de muitos daqueles livros. Sem fugir de Grande Gatsby, Som e a Fúria, Ficções, Madame Bovary e etc, há também uma porção de coisas bem atuais (anos 2000, inclusive), ainda não canônicas. As resenhas, que não são propriamente resenhas, mas uma espécie de sinopse do livro, são bem ruins, mas aí volto com o argumento do adoro listas e não importa qual e como.
Bem, mas o que eu ia dizer de verdade é que estava folhando o 501 must-read books e encontrei um chamado The Sweet Hereafter (O Doce Amanhã), de Russel Banks. É a história de um acidente com um ônibus escolar, numa pequena cidade da Nova Inglaterra, no qual uma porção de crianças morrem, e o acidente e suas conseqüências na comunidade são contados por quatro narradores diferentes. Achei bem próximo do Sinuca (tema & múltiplos narradores), e por isso fui atrás pra ver se me ajudava a resolver uma coisa ou outra. Estou no início, mas já deu pra sacar que vai ser uma boa leitura. Fazendo um link com o post anterior: a cidade é muito bem caracterizada, quero dizer, não só no aspecto geográfico, mas nas relações entre os habitantes, relações típicas de cidade pequena. O primeiro parágrafo é bastante bom:
“Um cachorro - foi um cachorro que eu vi, com certeza. Ou achei que vi. Estava nevando muito na hora, e na neve a gente vê coisas que não estão lá, ou não estão exatamente lá, mas também deixa de ver algumas das coisas que estão lá, de modo que quando a gente vê qualquer coisa, meu Deus, acaba por reagir de alguma forma, errando para o lado materno, se é que você consegue captar o que estou querendo dizer. É esta a minha experiência de motorista, mas também o meu temperamento enquanto mãe de dois filhos crescidos e mulher de um inválido; assim, pelo menos quando erro, erro do lado dos anjos.”
A certa altura da sinopse, na contracapa, está escrito: “…quando o pior acontece, de quem é a culpa?”. Imediatamente me lembrei de Enduring Love (Amor para Sempre), do Ian McEwan, e do quanto gosto daquele livro (na verdade, o que gosto mesmo é a primeira cena, uma das melhores já escritas). A pergunta ao longo de Enduring Love é a mesma: de quem é a culpa? Talvez a pergunta do Sinuca também seja De quem é a culpa? E fiquei pensando mesmo que sou um pouco obcecada com isso, com morte, com culpa, com arrependimento, mesmo antes da vida maldosamente ter me dado um exemplo real.
Update: terminei o primeiro capítulo de O Doce Amanhã e sabe quando é indispensável respirar fundo, ficar parada por alguns minutos e continuar lendo só no dia seguinte, porque até o momento já pesou uma tonelada? Pois.

Ou muito me engano, ou esse livro foi adaptado pro cinema em 1997. Ganhou algo em Cannes e foi indicado a Oscar de roteiro, essas coisas. O título em portugues é o mesmo, O Doce Amanhã. Só não sei se tem em dvd.

Puxa vida, que bom descobrir que isso existe em livro! Eu vi o filme na época em que foi lançado e achei tão bom que ele ficou na minha memória ( o que aliás aconteceu com outros dois filmes estrelados pela Sarah Poley_ “My life without me” e “The secret life of words”_ então estou começando achar que ela dá sorte!)
